“If a man has lost a leg or an eye, he knows he has lost a leg or an eye; but if he has lost a self—himself—he cannot know it, because he is no longer there to know it.” – Oliver Sacks
Medicine related to how we interface with our environment has always fascinated me. Neuroscience is the only field which has an impact on who we are, not what we are. Neurodegenerative diseases, TBIs, and other brain disorders have long been unsurmountable issues in the medical field.
I believe we have reached a stage in technology which will allow us to tackle neurological ailments. Our exponentially growing understanding of the brain is shown by developments such as BCIs and DBS systems. My goal is to help create a time when neurological disorders are as commonly fixed as broken bones.
P.S. Oliver Sacks wrote, “The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat”, a book I highly recommend for anyone interested in understanding how people experience the world differently.
